ISHS Acta Horticulturae 245: Engineering and Economic Aspects of Energy Saving in Protected Cultivation

ENERGY SIGNATURE FOR A GREENHOUSE NURSERY DISTRICT

Authors:   Jan S. Strøm, Marius G. Amsen
Abstract:
The goal of an investigation of energy data for a greenhouse nursery district was to find a simple expression for the energy standard of the nurseries. It should be based on data which could be collected with a minimum of effort and were easy to verify. The result was the definition of the ENERGY SIGNATURE for greenhouse nurseries.

The ENERGY SIGNATURE is determined by linear regression of the energy consumption as a function of the average outside - not room - temperature. Preferably weekly or monthly average values are used.

The ENERGY STANDARD of a greenhouse nursery is the slope of this regression line. The average value for a whole greenhouse nursery district containing 51 nurseries was 6.6 W/m2°C.

The ENERGY SIGNATURE is an important tool in energy management of greenhouse nurseries and can be used in budget calculations for changes in temperature control, energy saving equipment and choice of cultures.

The ENERGY SIGNATURE is nursery specific and may be taken as the energetic fingerprint of the particular greenhouse nursery.
