ISHS Acta Horticulturae 245: Engineering and Economic Aspects of Energy Saving in Protected Cultivation

STANDARD FOR FILM-COVERED GREENHOUSES

Author:   Ing. D. Waaijenberg
Abstract:
After the publication of the Dutch Standard for glasshouses (NEN 3859 - Greenhouses) impulses have been given to develop a Dutch Standard for film-covered greenhouses (film houses, polyhouses). One reason for this is the fact that for synthetic film houses specific structures and details are used, such as curved tubes (hoops) and clamp fittings, which are not common in glass-covered greenhouses. Also the wind and snow loads are different for the tunnel-type greenhouse compared with saddle-roofed greenhouses.

By means of a poster the structure of a synthetic film tunnel is presented. This structure has been designed in accordance with Standard NEN 3859 and the proposed loads for film houses. Some of the loads given in this Standard are, referred to in the poster.

Though designed for single-ply films, the concept can easily be adapted for double-ply films. The drafting of the Standards aims at reducing the occurrence of damage to greenhouses caused by wind, snow or other loads.
