ISHS Acta Horticulturae 245: Engineering and Economic Aspects of Energy Saving in Protected Cultivation

ASSESSING INCOME BENEFITS IN PROTECTED CULTIVATION WHEN ENERGY SAVING TECHNOLOGY IS INTRODUCED

Authors:   K. Mattas, M. Grafiadellis
Abstract:
Energy costs substantially affect the income earned by farmers who cultivate various crops in greenhouses. The Agricultural Research Center of Northern Greece has recently developed and tested an energy saving technology, the passive solar system. This system has been widely adopted by greenhouse enterprises specialized particularly in early tomato cultivation.

The economical efficiency of adopting the passive solar system in greenhouse early tomato cultivation is investigated and the appropriate methodology is presented. Moreover, the effect of seasonal and financial factors and price expectations on the expected net farm income are studied to determine the absolute benefits due to the adoption of this technology.
