ISHS Acta Horticulturae 245: Engineering and Economic Aspects of Energy Saving in Protected Cultivation

THE INFLUENCE OF ENERGY CONSERVATION ON CROP PRODUCTIVITY

Author:   K.E. Cockshull
Abstract:
Examples are given where crop productivity and quality have been adversely affected by adopting energy-conserving techniques. The effects these techniques have on the aerial environment and the effects these environmental changes have on crop productivity are reviewed. Although more research is needed on crop responses to certain factors in isolation and in combination, sufficient information is now available to enable some predictions to be made about crop performance under different insulation techniques and to assess the economic aspects of their use. The results can also be used to identify those techniques which merit receiving more research and development.
