ISHS Acta Horticulturae 245: Engineering and Economic Aspects of Energy Saving in Protected Cultivation

CLIMATE CONTROL IN A GLASS GREENHOUSE USING ENERGY SAVING TECHNOLOGIES

Author:   G. Riva
Abstract:
This note describes the design and preliminary tests conducted on a 2,400 m2 innovative greenhouse for flower-growing located in Desenzano (Lake Garda). The "Venlo" greenhouse was designed and buit in order to reduce energy demand and facilitate extensive climate control. The latter aspect is required to obtain maximum product quality and make it possible to plan market delivery. The heating plant is composed of: i) a 110 kWe - 150 kWt cogenerator; ii) a 70 kWe heat pump; iii) a 12,000 m3 thermal energy storage in water-saturated soil; iv) heating floor and fan-coil system.

Preliminary tests have shown that it is possible to obtain an overall heat transmission coefficient of 2.6 W/m2 °C under italian climatic conditions.
