ISHS Acta Horticulturae 245: Engineering and Economic Aspects of Energy Saving in Protected Cultivation

EVALUATION OF ARTIFICIAL LIGHT SYSTEMS

Author:   J. Meyer
Abstract:
For an overall evaluation of the use of artificial light in greenhouses, heat and electricity consumption, the greenhouse construction and the light conditions have to be regarded simultaneously.

The evaluation of control strategies for various artificial light systems was carried out by means of a modular simulation program. The results of the simulation led to the necessity of specific experimental investigations.

The energy consumption of artificial light systems varies very much in dependency on the insulation of the greenhouse. The artificial lighting acts like a heating system and reduces the amount of heating energy in the same magnitude as the installed electric power. The control strategy influences the possible running hours per year of the artificial light, especially if the heat demand of the greenhouse acts as an input paramenter.
