ISHS Acta Horticulturae 245: Engineering and Economic Aspects of Energy Saving in Protected Cultivation

COMPARISON OF MEASURED TEMPERATURES OF GEOTHERMALLY-HEATED GREENHOUSES IN ITALY, GREECE, CZECHOSLOVAKIA AND YUGOSLAVIA

Authors:   C. Nikita-Martzopoulou, M. Duda, C. Alberto Campiotti, K. Popovski
Abstract:
Italy, Greece, Czecholoslovakia, Yugoslavia and many other European countries can be estimated with considerable geothermal potential, allocated in areas suitable for protected crops.

For the last years strategical importance of food production and agriculture policies have stimulated in these countries a wide research work and investigations on new means and methods for the exploitation of available geothermal energy for greenhouse heating. Mostly of the experiences, have similar charateristics and objectives, specially in the field of low-temperature heatings systems.

In Italy, different heating techniques were investigated during last four years in a greenhouse complex of eight plastic-houses (25 x 8 m), using geothermal water at 40°C as heat source.

In Greece, six greenhouses of nearly the same dimensions, heated with thermal water of about 34°C are being under experimentation using similar heating systems.

In Czechoslovakia different heating systems were also investigated in nine greenhouses (30 x 3 m) utilizing thermal water at 52 °C.

At the same time, an experiment in 3 geothermal greenhouses (25 x 6 m) is going to start in Yugoslavia, by using thermal effluents coming from a big geothermal plant.

To obtain valuable results for different climates and crops, a collaboration among listed researchers has been planned for the next future.

As first step, a comparison of the previus experiments aimed to find out a common methodology, for the elaboration of energetical and agronomical parameters under different environments has been discussed in the frame of FAO/CNRE Network for Geothermal Energy Use in Agriculture.
