BENCH HEATING SYSTEMS AND THEIR INFLUENCE ON MICROCLIMATE

Authors:   J. Vogelezang, P. van Weel
Abstract:
The performance of bench heating systems can be evaluated by measuring their influence on the microclimate of the crop. The results of experiments with three different bench heating systems showed that it was possible to influence the temperature of the air, the temperature of different parts of the plant and the humidity. The extent to which the microclimate was altered was dependent on the bench heating system. An influence on air movement could not be shown. Bench heating can influence the microclimate to a great extent, but there are many other factors which affect the microclimate. This is true especially if we want to control the microclimate of an individual part of a plant in relation to the microclimate of another part. A heated aluminium bench top is the best of the three evaluated systems for the control of microclimate.
