ISHS Acta Horticulturae 245: Engineering and Economic Aspects of Energy Saving in Protected Cultivation

THE CEC'S SUPPORT FOR RESEARCH RELATED ACTIVITIES ON ENERGY SAVING IN GREENHOUSES

Author:   R.G. Hurd
Abstract:
An introduction is given to the way in which the Commission of the European Community (CEC) decides which agricultural research, development and demonstration topics it will support. This is followed by a short review of the work funded by the CEC devoted to energy saving in greenhouses. The work has included a major review of fossil fuel energy saving in agriculture, focussing on the potential alternative of solar energy. In addition a large number of demonstration projects on energy saving in general have been set up, 46 of which have a horticultural context. These are categorised and some conclusions presented. The CEC's support of efforts to coordinate work on energy saving in greenhouses is also mentioned and it is argued that this is particularly cost-effective for the CEC. Finally, some indication of the future programme is given, including emphasis on crop production efficiency and on the need to support projects which link across the EEC.
