ISHS Acta Horticulturae 245: Engineering and Economic Aspects of Energy Saving in Protected Cultivation

NEW METHODS OF GREENHOUSE HEATING

Author:   N.J. van de Braak
Abstract:
The rising prices of fossil fuel in the seventies provided a stimulus for researchers and industry to explore alternative means of greenhouse heating. The application of non conventional energy sources, such as industrial thermal effluents, solar energy, geothermal energy, heatpumps and cogeneration units, leads to unusual requirements for heating systems. As basic physics still holds after the oil crises, also "new" heating methods are subjected to the laws of heattransfer. A survey of the relevant parameters in the transfer mechanisms is given and the consequences of the changed requirements are discussed. A number of developments in the field of greenhouse heating is highlighted.
