ISHS Acta Horticulturae 245: Engineering and Economic Aspects of Energy Saving in Protected Cultivation

ENERGY SAVING AND CLIMATE CONTROL IN GREENHOUSES WITH CONCERTINA SHAPED SCREENS, MADE OF METALLIZED COMPLEX FILM

Author:   Th.F.M. Lommerse
Abstract:
The application of screens changes the greenhouse climate. Supported by scientific research, there is a growing awareness of the possbility of improving the greenhouse climate by means of a screen.

This development requires a screen and a screen installation which provides high energy savings, little light loss and climate control possibilities.

The objective of this project is to prove that with a concertina shaped screen with a closed metallized structure, all these effects can be achieved.

Provisional conclusions:

  • overall light transmission in the greenhouse reduced by concertina screen and screen installation from 68 to 65%.
  • energy savings with a closed screen circa 60%
  • by utilising small screen openings, the relative humidity can be controlled.
  • although small screen openings are used to control the climate, there is still a saving of energy.
  • side screens ensure uniform temperature.
