Abstract:
Plant density, variety and time of harvest were studied during four years of trials to maximise the production of Dutch White Cabbage in the weight ranges 700–1000 g and 1000 g - 1500 g.
The optimum plant density in most years was 100 000 plants/ha, and Slawdena was the best variety.
Harvesting before crop maturity did not increase the yield. of small heads, but substantially reduced the total marketable yield.
Yields in the 700–1000 g range varied from 6–20 t/ha, and in the 1000–1500 g range from 15–42 t/ha.
These combined sizes represented about 50% of total yield.
New uniform cultivars capable of producing a high proportion of small heads at close plant spacings are needed.
