Abstract:
Yield, fruit quality, tree size and major costs were compared in Golden Delicious and Cox on fully trellised Lincoln, Penn State and Tatura canopies and Four Leader and Regulated bush hedgerows.
Tatura (Cox) and Four Leader (Golden Delicious) dominated in tree size.
Over the first four crops Tatura was the most productive system in both cultivars.
The yield per hectare was similar for the majority of treatments especially with Cox.
Penn State emerged as the best performer with Golden Delicious.
The Golden Delicious three trellised canopies had similar yield efficiency per unit tree size.
The packout was the lowest in Lincoln trellis in both cultivars.
Lincoln and Tatura trellis were the most expensive to establish.
When the relevant yield components are related to the main inputs during the establishment phase, it does not appear that very elaborate trellised canopies are economically justifiable.
