ISHS Acta Horticulturae 243: IV International Symposium on Research and Development on Orchard and Plantation Systems

POSSIBILITIES FOR THE USE OF PICKING-AIDS IN MULTI-ROW SYSTEMS

Author:   P. van Lookeren Campagne
Abstract:
Multi-row systems of various forms are very popular in The Netherlands. For example the full field system gives approximately 10% higher yield but gives problems in the mechanical work like spraying, weed control, mowing and picking. The IMAG has developed the 7-row system which has about 3500 trees per hectare with the rows planted at 2.0 x 1.0 m. The mechanisation system that makes it possible to spray for pest as well as weed control works satisfactory. A special picking-aid has been developed that makes it possible to pick by hand and transport the fruit from the tree by transport-belts into bulkbins. This article gives more details about the research and the advantages (or disadvantages) of this planting system.
