ISHS Acta Horticulturae 243: IV International Symposium on Research and Development on Orchard and Plantation Systems

THE IMPACT OF GA-BIOSYNTHESIS INHIBITORS ON PEACH MEADOW ORCHARDS

Author:   A. Erez
Abstract:
One of the drawbacks of growing peach trees in the meadow orchard system is the use of severe annual pruning. This technique, although successful horticulturally, is based on wasting a still potentially productive part of the plant in order to promote new growth. The availability of strong growth retardants of the type of gibberellin biosynthesis inhibitors (GBI), combined with the know how to obtain a controlled effect, enables the integration of their use in the system. This results in reduction in the frequency of severe pruning from annual to biennial. Preliminary data point to positive effects of such combinations. The sequence of treatments for the intensive and the mechanized meadow orchard systems is described.
