ISHS Acta Horticulturae 243: IV International Symposium on Research and Development on Orchard and Plantation Systems

HIGH-DENSITY PLANTING SYSTEM TRIAL WITH PEAR

Author:   P. S. Wagenmakers
Abstract:
Yield per ha of the pear cultivar Doyenné du Comice increased with planting density from 2000 to 4000 trees per ha. At a given density the planting system had no significant effect on yield in the first 7 years. Inner trees yielded less than outer trees in three-row systems, but not in five-row beds. Leaf area per tree decreased linearly with density. Three rows and five rows tended to have a higher leaf area than single rows at a given density. Light transmission per tree, recorded by fisheye analysis, decreased with density. Trees in three rows and five-row beds tended to transmit less light than in single rows.
