ISHS Acta Horticulturae 243: IV International Symposium on Research and Development on Orchard and Plantation Systems

THE PERFORMANCE OF 'IMPERIAL MCINTOSH' APPLE IN MICHIGAN ON NEW ROOTSTOCKS FROM THE GENEVA APPLE ROOTSTOCK BREEDING PROGRAM

Authors:   Ronald L. Perry, James N. Cummins
Abstract:
The performance of 'Imperial McIntosh' on a number of untested rootstocks has been under evaluation in a replicated planting in Clarksville, Michigan, USA since establishment in 1982. Sixty non-field tested rootstock clones are being compared to M.26, M.9/MM. 111, M.7a, MM. 106, and MM. 111 standard rootstocks. This is a report presented on tree vigor, blossom density and yield influence by rootstock treatments. Clones expressing the most dwarfing and precocious characteristics are progeny from crosses between Robusta 5 and either M.9, M.27 or Ottawa 3. The most dwarfing clones resemble trees propagated on M.26 or M.9/MM. 111 interstem. Anchorage on all clones has thus far been good except for a Robusta 5 X M.27 clone.
