| Abstract:
Cv. Fuji apple trees grafted on M.9a and M.26 rootstocks were planted in single row systems at densities of 900, 1250 and 2000 trees per hectare. Trees on M.26 appeared to be more vigorous than the trees on M.9a at lower planting densities. Yield per tree was inversely related to the number of trees per hectare on both rootstocks. Fruits from trees in the most dense spacing were a little small but there were no significant differences in the qualities of fruits from trees planted at different densities per hectare. Alternative bearing started 7 years after planting, the greatest difference between 'on' and 'off' years was found in the most dense spacing. Cvs. Tsugaru, Red King Delicious, Jonagold and Fuji apple trees on M.9a and M.26 rootstocks were planted in single rows at densities of 1250 trees per hectare. Cvs. Jonagold and Fuji on M.9a and Cv. Fuji on M.26 appeared to be more vigorous and productive than the other cultivars on both rootstocks. The colour of Tsugaru fruits on M.9a was poorer than those on M.26. Apple fruits from Jonagold on M.9a were larger and were ready for harvest later than those on M.26. | |
