Abstract:
Leaves on fruiting spurs of Golden Delicious trees were selected, and their photosynthetic rates measured before fruit removal and at 24 and 96 hours thereafter.
Two treatments were applied: harvest of the fruit on tagged spurs only and removal of the entire crop.
When only the fruit on the tagged spurs was detached, the photosynthetic rates showed either no variation or increased over the first 24 hours, and decreased only after 96 hours following harvest.
When the entire crop was removed, however, the photosynthetic rate of the leaves on the tagged shoots decreased 24 hours after harvest and remained low after 96 hours.
