ISHS Acta Horticulturae 243: IV International Symposium on Research and Development on Orchard and Plantation Systems

PLANTING SYSTEMS WITH M.27

Author:   L.D. Tukey
Abstract:
M.27 was suitable as an apple tree size controlling rootstock under vigorous soil and growing conditions in Pennsylvania for vigorous apple cultivars trained in a spindle, French AXE, or the Penn State low trellis hedgerow form. However, a high density planting was necessary to obtain land productivity. Crabapples on M.27 produced a compact form with intense flowering, desirable for a pollenizer in intensive plantings. As an interstock, M.27 caused dwarfing, but caused vigorous rootstocks to sucker considerably. It also showed resistance to fire blight infection through the bark of the interstock. M.27 was readily inhibited by triazole growth retardants, and appeared to be suitable to M.9 type soils.
