ISHS Acta Horticulturae 243: IV International Symposium on Research and Development on Orchard and Plantation Systems

EFFECT OF TREE DENSITY, TREE HEIGHT AND RECTANGULARITY ON GROWTH, FLOWERING, AND FRUIT PRODUCTION

Authors:   O. Callesen, P. S. Wagenmakers
Abstract:
In a planting systems trial the significance of density, rectangularity, and tree height was examined. The trial was planted in the Netherlands and in Denmark. The results are presented in two papers. This paper deals with growth, flowering and fruiting. A higher number of flowers and fruits per ha was found with increased density. Trees at the highest densities tended to be less efficient, and trees at the 1:1 rectangularity and the lowest height (1.5 m) were the most efficient to produce fruit and had a lower tendency for biennial flowering.
