EFFECTS OF SOWING DATES ON DIFFERENT VARIETIES OF WELSH ONION (ALLIUM FISTULOSUM L.) UNDER TEMPERATE COASTAL CLIMATE |

| Abstract:
The possibilities for growing Japanese varieties of Welsh onions as green bunching onions under Danish climatical conditions were investigated. The effect of 3 different sowing dates - 1 May, 1 June and 1 July - on yield, crop development and quality were determined. Four Japanese varieties were sown directly on sandy loam in 1986 and 1987. Results showed that Welsh onion can easily be grown under Danish climatical conditions even in a cold season like 1987. The best results were achieved with sowing at 1 May or 1 June. The time for crop development was about 105 days. About 80 per cent of the harvested onion plants were marketable with a yield of about 35 ton per ha. Sowing at 1 July was too late and lead to problems with slow development, low marketable yield (about 15 ton per ha) and quality decrease caused by fungus diseases. | |
