ISHS Acta Horticulturae 242: I International Symposium on Diversification of Vegetable Crops

DIVERSIFICATION OF THE ASSORTMENT OF GLASSHOUSE VEGETABLES: A REVIEW AND LOOK AHEAD

Author:   G.W.H. Welles
Abstract:
During the period of 1965–1988 the assortment of glasshouse vegetable crops, grown in the Netherlands, has extended considerably. Between 1965–1980 crop research emphasised the study of crops grown commercially in the southern part of Europe. Especially within the assortment of fruit vegetable crops, new crops could be added to the traditional ones. Variations in colour and size of traditional fruit vegetable crops also proved to be successful in growing. Between 1980-1988 exotic leaf, root and fruit crops were tested. Until now only pakchoi and cherry tomato seem to offer possibilities for further expansion.

Year-round production of a single crop becomes more and more important for high profitability. Consequences of specialisation on the nurseries for the future policy of crop research towards diversification are discussed.
