GENETIC RESOURCES FOR EARLY AND HIGH YIELDING SWEET POTATO LINES (IPOMOEA BATATAS)

Authors:   P.H. Ramanjini Gowda, K.M. Bojappa, B.B. Madalageri
Abstract:
Germplasm collections of sweet potato from India and abroad were evaluated for earliness and tuber yield in pot and field experiments. In pot experiments the local selections which took 130–150 days gave lower yields than the varieties from Taiwan which were early (95–110 days) and high yielding. Taiwan varieties were less sweet compared to the local varieties. Based on the results of the pot experiments, seven important varieties from Taiwan were evaluated in the field - CI 853–4, CI 854–13, CI 707–20, I-57, I-232, CI 440–57 and A250/22–2. Out of the seven, CI 853–4, A250/22–2 and I-232 were found to mature early (95–110 days) and yield heavily (20–25t/ha) compared to the local variety (12t/ha).

Besides, the local variety did not form tubers even by 95 days. Inspite of low yield and longer duration the local variety was preferred by the consumers because of its sweetness. But from the point of view of the farmers, the variety CI 853–4 was found to be good because of its earliness and high yielding capacity.
