F1 HYBRIDS CREATION IN RED-LIMB BRUSSELS CHICORY ADAPTED TO HYDROPONIC FORCING

Authors:   B. De Coninck, H. Bannerot
Abstract:
This red-limb Brussels chicory has been obtained by complex cross with witloof and Verone type in italian chicory.

From the first cross, realized before 1970, a very heterogeneous F2, in which no plant had sufficient morphological and coloured features, has been obtained.

Therefore, the best coloured-limb plants have been pollinated by witloof and new selections had been realized in the following selfed progenies. Three backcross had been necessary for obtaining the expected level in colour.

From the third backcross, witloof parents have been lines of good hybrids adapted to hydroponic forcing. So, two complementary groups of progenies had been obtained.

Today, we have near 150 S3 lines. Four of them have been choiced according to their self value and their crossed value for shape, colour and homogeneity. These lines will be the parents of three red-limb Brussels chicory hybrids which will be cultivated in 1990 in experimental conditions according to the present cultivation and forcing methods.
