SWEET PEPPER THE NEW SPECIES IN POLISH HORTICULTURE

Author:   P. Nowaczyk
Abstract:
Sweet pepper /Capsicum annuum L./ becomed the object of particular interest of breeders and vegetable producers in Poland. Not long ago it was in amateur culture only. The introduction of new Polish cultivars increased the seed production of this vegetable and its cultivating area several times in last years. The settled cultivars, among other 'Ino', 'Kano' and 'Stano', breeded by author, popularized sweet pepper in vegetable production.

'Ino' - The cultivar characterized by dwarf and compact plants. It is very early and suitable for culture under plastic tunnels in the main crop as well as in the second crop after early cabbage or cauliflower.

'Kano' - The semidwarf cultivar suitable for growing in not heated plastic tunnels and in delayed culture in a glasshouse. The plants are giving 10 thick-walled, red fruits on the average.

'Stano' - The best yielding, Polish cultivar suitable for outdoor growing and for protected culture as well. The market yield of fruits, which are bright red when maturing, from not heated plastic tunnels, is more than 8 kg/m2. The hight of not cut plants is from 70 to 80 cm.

The qualitative breeding will be the main direction in the next research works. The attention will be paid to heterosis breeding.
