ISHS Acta Horticulturae 242: I International Symposium on Diversification of Vegetable Crops

POSSIBILITIES OF TROPICAL SOLANACEAE AND CUCURBITACEAE INTRODUCTION IN FRANCE

Authors:   J.Y. Péron, E. Demaure, C. Hannetel
Abstract:
Adaptation of tropical plants is an interesting way for the widening in the assortment of vegetables in temperate zones. Tropical vegetable species are numerous in Solanaceae and Cucurbitaceae.

Three species of Physalis (P. peruviana, P. pruinosa, P. ixocarpa) and Solanum nuricatun (Solanaceae), Cucunis netuliferus (Cucurbitaceae) are studied in our laboratory. Specific works leaded in each of these species, are reported and the conditions of their development in France are discussed.

The interest of other plants present in the collection of our department, such as Solanum aethiopicum and S. macrocarpon (Solanaceae), Sechium edule, Monordica charantia and Tricosanthes sp. (Cucurbitaceae), seems limited in the local conditions.
