SOME RESULTS IN BILBERRY, LINGONBERRY AND HIGHBUSH BLUEBERRY RESEARCH IN BULGARIA

Abstract:
Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) and lingonberry (V. vitis-idaea L.) research have established the productivity of natural growth sites, the influence of economic activity, selection and propagation of valuable forms and creation of plantations.

Highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L.) research was directed toward the cultivation and testing of cultivars for industrial introduction in Bulgaria.

Five cultivars in the northern foot of the Balkan planina mountain were compared. A field was planted in 1983 with 'Concord', 'Coville', 'Earliblue', 'Goldtraube' and 'Jersey.' Growth was delayed during the first years due to breaking by snow fall and frost damages, but since 1986 growth increases have been recorded.

The most productive in decreasing order in 1987 were 'Coville', 'Earliblue', 'Jersey' with fruits of good quality, and 'Goldtraube' and 'Concord' with poorer yield. The best berry size is observed in 'Earliblue' and 'Coville', but they are smaller in 1987 compared to those in 1986 on account of drought.
