Abstract:
The mango is now one of the commonest trees below 3,000 - 4,000 ft in the tropics of Africa and the Americas and it is a comparatively recent introduction in many areas.
Mangoes are often grown for ornamental purposes and as roadside and avenue trees in the centre of Balem in Brazil.
A brief account of the origin and distribution of the mango is given by Purseglove (5) and a fuller account in Singh (6) and Mukherjee (4).
