ISHS Acta Horticulturae 24: Symposium on Mango and Mango Culture

SOME LOCAL QUALITY MANGOES IN MADHYA PRADESH

Authors:   R. Kashyap, R.P. Jyotishi
Abstract:
Mango is the leading fruit of Madhya Pradesh and is grown in almost all the districts of the State. Its cultivation in M. P. dates back to times immemorial which is evidenced by its mention in the literature of Kalidas, culture of Shiwarinarayan, and Narasinghnath and miles and miles long very old and robust trees found growing along the PachmarhiHoshangabad Road and the area around Govindgarh in Rewa.

Survey work undertaken so far has revealed that in addition to the common well known commercial varieties of mango, which are grown to some extent in different parts of M. P., a good many unknown varieties also exist which have acquired reputation locally due to their special characters of quality and taste. A few such varieties have been described in this paper.
