ISHS Acta Horticulturae 24: Symposium on Mango and Mango Culture

HYBRID MANGOES OF ANDHRA PRADESH

Authors:   G.S Swamy, B.V. Rama Rao, P. Jayarami Reddy
Abstract:
The work on planned hybridisation in mango has been in progress in few States (1, 3, 4, 5, 6). Hybridisation work at this station was initiated as early as in 1940 and 422 hybrid progenies in 205 combinations were evolved. After assessing the fruit quality of 308 progenies in 130 combinations at close spacing, 32 hybrids were adjudged as promising by Bhujanga Rao and Rangacharlu (1958). Out of these, 22 were tested for orchard performance under normal spacing and 4 hybrids namely Neeleshan (Neelum x Baneshan), Neelgoa (Neelum x Yerramulgoa), Swarnajehangir (Chinnasuvarnarekha x Jehangir) and Neeluddin (Neelum x Himayuddin) were recommended for commercial cultivation by Bhunjanga Rao et al. (2). The rest of the hybrid progenies were evaluated for fruit quality as and when they came to bearing. The results are incorporated in this paper.

Out of the 70 progenies studied, 18 promising hybrids possesing desirable characters were selected. Among these, the top ranking five hybrids were described in detail as furnished here.
