ASPECTS OF RAINFASTNESS OF CULTAR (PACLOBUTRAZOL) ON GLASSHOUSE GROWN APPLE AND PEACH

Authors:   T. Jones, C.A. Hart, J.S. Dearden
Abstract:
A scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to assess the tenacity in simulated rain of individual dried down droplets of 'Cultar' (0.5 g a.i./l) ± 1 g/l Tween 20, applied to glasshouse grown apple leaves. Young peach plants foliar sprayed with 0.075 g/l 'Cultar' ± 1 g/l Tween 20 were also artificially rain washed and growth measured. Observations indicated that 'Cultar' alone has fairly good rainfast properties, but the addition of Tween 20 considerably reduced the tenacity of the paclobutrazol particles and reduced the rainfastness. The addition of Tween 20 however greatly improved the level of retardation of the peach seedlings treated with 'Cultar' in the absence of any rain washing, but this advantage was lost if simulated rain washing occurred during the first day after treatment, and retardation was similar to the 'Cultar' alone applications.
