N-(PHENYLMETHYL)-1H-PURINE-6-AMINE (BA) AS A CHEMICAL THINNER FOR 'IDARED' APPLE

Author:   D.C. Elfving
Abstract:
The cytokinin N-(phenylmethyl)-1H-purine-6-amine (6-benzyladenine or BA) reduced fruit-set and final yield of 'Idared' apples at concentrations up to 150 mg a.i./liter as dilute sprays. Fruit size was increased by BA treatments up to 100 mg/liter but was decreased slightly at 150 mg/liter. When BA at 50 mg/liter was supplemented with carbaryl (CB) as a tank mix, cropping was reduced to less than 20% of controls. CB alone (600 mg a.i./liter) reduced fruit-set by 57% and yield by 54%. BA increased fruit length-diameter (LD) ratio and decreased seed number per fruit with increasing concentration. CB alone had no such effect. Supplementation of BA 50 mg/liter with CB had no effect on fruit size, shape or seed number although thinning was substantially increased. Decreased crop load increased trunk cross-sectional area growth proportionately. BA increased return bloom approximately equally at all concentrations. Supplementing BA 50 mg/liter with CB did not increase return bloom.
