ISHS Acta Horticulturae 239: VI International Symposium on Growth Regulators in Fruit Production

INVOLVEMENT OF PLANT GROWTH REGULATORS AND ENDOGENOUS GROWTH SUBSTANCES IN THE CONTROL OF ALTERNATE BEARING

Author:   S. Lavee
Abstract:
The present paper describes the relationships of different growth regulators - mainly auxins, cytokinins and gibberellins - to flower bud induction, differentiation and thus alternate bearing. The effects of developing fruits, fruit load, vegetative vigor, leaves and environmental conditions on the activity of growth regulators in alternate bearing is also considered. It is suggested that the known growth regulators are mainly active as messengers in carrying signals from developing fruits for metabolic changes in the leaves. Thereafter their activity varies as a response to the degree of differentiation inhibition developed by the leaves. A scheme for the involvement of growth regulators in controlling alternate bearing is presented.
