EFFECT OF PACLOBUTRAZOL ON GROWTH OF ROOTED OLIVE CUTTINGS

Authors:   C. Navarro, M. Benlloch, R. Fernández-Escobar
Abstract:
'Arbequina' and 'Manzanillo' olive cuttings rooted under mist and placed in hydroponic culture were continuously supplied with 1.36 μM paclobutrazol added to the nutrient solution. Paclobutrazol partially inhibited shoot growth but the treated plants continued growing throughout the 71 days of the experiment, although to a lesser extent than controls. Leaf weight, leaf area and the length of the longest root were reduced in treated plants, whereas specific leaf area (SLA) and K+ accumulation in leaves were increased. No differences were found in chlorophyll content or fresh weight between treated and control plants. The results indicate that paclobutrazol is a weak growth retardant in olive in contrast to the potent effect found in other fruit tree species.
