PERFORMANCE OF PACLOBUTRAZOL (CULTAR) IN CONTROLLING VEGETATIVE GROWTH AND CROPPING OF STONE FRUITS

Authors:   S. Stan, N. Burloi, I. Popescu, N. Fenesanu, M. Cotorobai
Abstract:
Soil and foliar applications of paclobutrazol to high density plantings of sweet cherry, peach and plum reduced vegetative growth for 2–3 years after treatment, resulting in a proportional decrease in weight of prunings and in labour costs, and enhancement of flower bud formation and fruit set. Fruit yield per unit of canopy volume was increased up to five times in sweet cherry and up to twice in peach and plum depending on concentration, method and time of application. On sweet cherry all treatments increased the % of flowers per bud damaged by frost in winter 1984–85, although there was a non-significant decrease in the % of flower buds injured.
