Abstract:
Pruned and unpruned trees of Golden Delicious/M9 were treated after petal fall in 1986 and 1987 with paclobutrazol either as a foliar spray at 2000 ppm or as a soil application at l g a.i. per tree.
Pruned foliar-treated trees showed the greatest reduction in growth, while better fruiting was obtained in unpruned soil-treated trees.
Paclobutrazol did not influence fruit weight, photosynthetic activity or the sugar and starch content of the leaves.
However, fruit firmness and sugar content were higher in unpruned trees, irrespective of paclobutrazol application.
