ENHANCEMENT OF GERMINATION AND ETHYLENE PRODUCTION OF ORIENTAL PEAR CV. LIAULI BY APPLICATION OF THIDIAZURON AND CYANAMIDE

Authors:   H. Lin, C. Lin, G. Jauh
Abstract:
Unchilled seeds of Pyrus serotina Rehd. cv. Liauli were used for screening agents to enhance germination. Thidiazuron (N-phenyl-N'- (1,2,3-thiadiazol-5-yl) urea) treatment enhanced seed germination significantly. The % germination increased with the concentration of thidiazuron from 50 μM to 400 μM. 26 days after treatment, the % germination was 16.0 for control, 29.5 for 0.1% cyanamide treatment, and 35.0, 53.5, 57.5 for 200 μM, 300 μM and 400 μM of thidiazuron, respectively. The combination of 200 μM thidiazuron and 0.1% cyanamide had the highest germination of 68.5%. All treatments with thidiazuron were accompanied by higher ethylene production. Ethylene tended to reduce radicle and hypocotyl length. Thidiazuron did not enhance germination of chilled seeds, but promoted the release of ethylene.
