ISHS Acta Horticulturae 239: VI International Symposium on Growth Regulators in Fruit Production

MANAGEMENT OF SELF-ROOTED TISSUE-CULTURE APPLE TREES: II. GROWTH REGULATOR EFFECTS

Authors:   George L. Steffens, R. H. Zimmerman
Abstract:
Tissue culture (TC) propagated 'Triple Red Delicious' and 'Gala' apple trees grown 1.8 m apart were treated during the 3rd and 4th growing seasons with plant growth regulators (PGRs) to control tree size and induce early flowering. Alar+Ethrel spray had no effect on tree size or flowering either year and Cultar and Prunit (triazole PGRs) sprays were not consistent. Cultar and Prunit trunk drenches reduced tree size both the 3rd and 4th season and Prunit trunk paint reduced size the 4th season. Prunit trunk drench tripled the number of flower clusters on 'Triple Red' the season after application. Cultar and Prunit trunk drenches and the Prunit trunk paint increased fruit set of 'Gala' TC trees from 26% to 60–90% the 4th season.
