| Abstract:
Trees of 'Gala' and 'Triple Red Delicious' apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) budded on M.7a rootstock were larger after the first year than self-rooted tissue-cultured (TC) trees. However, TC trees grew more rapidly and were larger than the budded trees after the third growing season. Trees on M.7a began flowering one year earlier than TC trees and number of flower clusters was 4.5 ('Gala') and 9 ('Triple Red Delicious') times greater on the budded trees in the fourth growing season. Fruit yields on the budded trees were only 30–40% greater, however. Spacing had little or no effect on vegetative growth or flowering until the fourth growing season. | |
