ISHS Acta Horticulturae 238: Symposium on Substrates in Horticulture other than Soils in situ

BUFFERING CAPACITIES OF SOME MINERAL AND ORGANIC SUBSTRATES

Authors:   I. Ünver, Y. Ataman, M.R. Çanga, N. Munsuz
Abstract:
Compensation and alleviation capabilities of perlite, rhyolitic and basaltic tuff, river sand and clinoptilolite zeolite to causal extremities were compared. A garden soil (OM 24%) and fen peat sample were also tested as the controls. The tuff and zeolite samples were separated into 2–6, 6–10 and 10–14 mm fractions so that examining possible physical behaviour differences.

Buffering capacity to reaction changes was examined through monitoring the changes in pH with acid and alkali addition. For determination of heat conductance characteristics, materials were placed in a turn-table under infrared lamps. Head load was gradually increased and temperatures at various depths were frequently measured with thermocouples. A series of simulated experiments were conducted in order to estimate capillary continuity, cumulative evaporation, moisture retention characteristics (pore size distribution, aeration porosity, easily and slowly available water content), and physical stability.
