ISHS Acta Horticulturae 238: Symposium on Substrates in Horticulture other than Soils in situ

DEVELOPMENTS IN THE MEASUREMENT OF AIR FILLED POROSITY OF PEAT SUBSTRATES

Authors:   P.J. Byrne, B. Carty
Abstract:
A modified method for the measurement of Air Filled Porosity (AFP) has been developed by the Research & Development Department of Bord na Mona, Ireland in order to provide a robust laboratory method for the determination of the drainage properties of peat substrates destined for use in nursery stock. A special vessel with a rigid extension collar and a sealable base is used for this test and overcomes problems encountered when using standard flower pots.

The effects of newly available peat amendments - namely peat fibre and coarse peat particles - were determined, and their possible contribution to the development of nursery stock media is discussed.
