ISHS Acta Horticulturae 238: Symposium on Substrates in Horticulture other than Soils in situ

EFFECT OF COMPOST FERTILISER CONTENT AND LIQUID-FERTILISATION ON GROWTH OF PRIMROSE

Author:   J.C.R. Seager
Abstract:
Seedlings of primrose, Primula acaulls were grown in Bord na Mona al l-peat composts in 9cm pots from autumn to early spring. Maturity measurements showed that larger and more attractive plants were produced In a low-N compost than in one containing standard NK levels. However, compost with low N and low K was the most effective.

Liquid-fertilisation Improved follage colour and crop growth when given as a 200:20:200 p pm NPK regime from mid-November to flowering. Capillary matting and hose-watering were equally effective as means of irrigating primroses. While there were no symptoms of overwatering and few of overfeeding in the experiment, the risk of these problems for growers are discussed.
