Abstract:
Organic matter accumulation in Anatolia has been very limited mainly because of the climatic conditions.
The general sequence of a hot, dry summer after a rainy, cool winter has encouraged its mineralization process.
Few expectional areas located on southeastern coast of Black Sea where annual precipitation is over 2 m, and on poorly drained random marshes a couple of lagoons at their eutropic stage were dealt with.
In this pioneering research study in Turkey, 16 locations were identified with field surveys.
Peat samples were taken from 4 depth at every 20 cm for laboratory studies.
In addition to the determination of main physical and chemical properties, moisture retention characteristics of three fractions (0-2 mm, 2-6.35 mm and larger than 6.35 mm) of peat samples were ascertained.
Peatlands occupy about 240 sqkm area in Turkey.
Necessary conservation practices and amendment measures were discussed.
