A RECIRCULATING HYDROPONIC SYSTEM WITH PERLITE AND BASALTIC TUFF

Abstract:
An adaptive research study has been conducted in a commercial glasshouse for three years. For that purpose, 10 semicylindric concrete channels each 5 m long and 32.5 cm in diameter were filled with perlite (0.5–4 mm) with the exception of one which contained basaltic tuff (8–14 mm), called tephra. The gravitational nutrition stream was very shallow providing enough aeration for the upper root zone.

Nutrient solution in the catchment tank was recirculated by a submersible pump. Catchment and header tanks were insulated against temperature fluctuations. Water supply and pH adjustment were daily works. Nutrient addition intervals were 3–15 days.

Sum of class 1 and class 2 tomato yields were between 0.5–7.2 kg/plant (1.5–20.7 kg/sqm). Numbers of class 1 cucumbers were between 15.2–32.7 per plant (43.1–92.9 per sqm) by years.

Vegetative growth and attraction of geranium and dwarf chrysanthemum were improved substantially in hydroponic system. Flowers were denser, brighter and larger than those grown in soil.
