NUTRITION OF STRAWBERRIES IN ROCKWOOL

Authors:   R.R. Hunter, J.V. Morgan
Abstract:
Five nutritional treatments were applied to cold-stored runners of cv. Gorella planted into rockwool in August. Two crops were taken : one in Autumn and a second in Spring subsequent to winter chilling out-of-doors. The treatments consisted of four nitrate levels ranging from 1.25 mmo1.l-1 to 10 mmol.1-1 at a conductivity of 1.4 mS and an additional treatment at a lower conductivity of 0.7 mS with 2.5 mmol.1-1 nitrate.

Nutrition had little effect on the yield of the Autumn crop. In the Spring crop the lower conductivity treatment gave the highest yield and this was associated with increased fruit number and reduced leaf area and stolon number. The highest nitrate treatment out-yielded lower nitrate treatments at equal conductivity level, but there was no significant difference in leaf area between these treatments.
