ISHS Acta Horticulturae 238: Symposium on Substrates in Horticulture other than Soils in situ

INFLUENCE OF PROPAGATION MEDIUM ON THE GROWTH OF SPRAY CHRYSANTHEMUM IN HYDROPONICS.

Authors:   J.V. Morgan, A.T. Moustafa
Abstract:
A range of media, including nursery-mixed loam-based compost, peat-perlite, rockwool, fine and coarse polyurethane, Leca and recirculating and static nutrient solution, were assessed for their effects on rooting of spray chrysanthemum cuttings under controlled environment conditions. The rooted cuttings were subsequently grown-on in NFT and growth and development were monitored to harvesting. The loam-based compost was inferior to the soilless media. Peat-perlite medium gave the best overall results, but the bare-root plants in recirculating solution were nearly as good and generally better than the other soilless media. This method of rooting the cuttings was simple and easy to manage and additionally it offers a considerable saving in solid media costs.
