ISHS Acta Horticulturae 236: V International Symposium on Small Fruit Virus Diseases

FOREWORD

Author:   R. Stace-Smith
Abstract:
The papers included in this symposium were presented in either oral or poster format at the Fifth International Symposium on Small Fruit Virus Diseases, held at Thessaloniki, Greece, 12–18 June, 1988. The symposium was held under the auspices of the Commission for Plant Protection of the International Society for Horticultural Science. It was organized by the Working Group on Virus Diseases of Small Fruits in collaboration with the Working Group on Fruit Tree Virus Diseases, the Ministry of Agriculture, Greece and the Hellenic Phytopathological Society. We extend our appreciation to the Organizing Committee in Greece for the excellence in facilities and arrangements.

As with the previous four symposia of the Virus Diseases of Small Fruits, the one in Greece was held in conjunction with the Symposium on Fruit Tree Virus Diseases. Their symposium will be published as a separate volume of Acta Horticulturae (No. 235). Copies of both volumes may be ordered from the ISHS secretariat, Dreijenplein 4, 6703 HB Wageningen, Netherlands.

At the business meeting of the Working Group, Dr. A.T. Jones was elected to succeed me as Chairman. Also, the group expressed thanks to Dr. A.F. Murant, the past chairman and to Dr. R.H. Converse, Chairman of the Editorial Committee responsible for the production of the handbook, Virus Diseases of Small Fruits. This handbook was prepared under the auspices of the Small Fruit Virus Working Group, and was published by the United States Department of Agriculture as Agricultural Handbook Number 631 in 1987. This book is for sale at $20 US per copy (plus postage) from Superintendent of Documents, U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington, D.C., 20402, U.S.A. The stock number of the book is 001–000–04483–4.

The combined symposia were truly international in nature, with over a hundred registered delegates representing 25 countries. The setting provided ample opportunity to meet other workers and to discuss problems of mutual interest. The mid-week field trip and post-symposia excursion provided an impressive insight into Greek agriculture and culture with the result that the 1988 symposia were a memorable experience to all those who were fortunate enough to attend.
