TOLERANCE TO PLUM POX VIRUS IN APRICOT

Authors:   F. Dosba, M. Lansac, J.M. Audergon, P. Maison, G. Massonié
Abstract:
Sharka due to plum pox virus (PPV) is causing more and more damages in apricot orchards in most of the European countries.

The aim of this study was to estimate the degree of resistance of different apricot cultivars and to determine if it is possible to transmit the resistance to a progeny.

Almost all the apricot varieties tested for their behaviour to PPV were susceptible ; only 4 cultivars appeared tolerant : 'Stark Earli Orange', 'Badami', 'Stella' and 'Harcot'.

Hybrids issued from the cross 'Stark Earli Orange' x 'Screara' have been tested to PPV after inoculation by chip-budding or by aphids with a severe strain (PPV-M) or a milder one (PPV-D). Only 3 hybrids over 64 clearly appeared tolerant to PPV after 3 years of experimentation. These data need to be confirmed in plants at the adult stage.
