VIRUS CONTROL AND THE CERTIFICATION OF FRUIT TREE NURSERY PLANTS IN SPAIN (1980–1987)

Authors:   A. Casallo, A. Barea, T. Sanz
Abstract:
In 1977, an Agreement between the Institute Nacional de Investigaciones Agrarias (INIA) and the Institute Nacional de Semillas y Plantas de Vivero (INSPV) was started for the selection, reproduction and control of fruit material by the Fruit Department of the Research Centre of the INIA in Zaragoza (CRIDA-O3) (Campus Aula Dei).

Since 1980, high quality material from the nuclear plot in the CRIDA-O3 or from abroad was distributed to nursery growers.

On 16th July, 1982, the Technical Regulations for the Control and Certification of Nursery Plants were approved, thus establishing the Policy for the certification of fruit material.

In 1967, the certification of 173 varieties from different species was started and 8.602 virus control tests were performed, foreseeing a production of more than 500.000 units in the 1988 season.
